Starting with aquatic plants

Aquariums I was used to seeing from childhood consisted mainly of colourful gravel, a clunky filter and plastic ornaments such as castles and faux plants. This classic setup made aquarium keeping look incredibly drab to me if I'm honest.

It was incredible to me to see how quickly plants changed that view. Along with creating a more natural habitat for your fauna; plants make a tank exponentially more beautiful.

In this guide I aim to walk you along scientific and observational lines that will help you with everything you need to start out using aquatic plants whether it be in aquariums or terrariums and anything that your imagination can fit in between. I’ll start with considerations for growing plants under water as this is where the variables intersect in a more complex manner. I will then follow on to how these same plants may behave when used in terrariums.
